How Pool Heater Sizing Works

Pool heaters are sized by BTU output — the amount of heat they can add per hour. The standard industry formula, used across most manufacturer sizing guides, is:

BTU/hr needed = Pool Surface Area (sq ft) × Desired Temperature Rise (°F) × 12

The “× 12” factor accounts for typical heat loss from evaporation and wind on an outdoor pool. It’s a rule of thumb, not a precise physics calculation, but it’s the same starting point pool professionals and heater manufacturers use to recommend a model.

Why Surface Area, Not Volume

Heat is lost mostly through the water’s surface — evaporation, wind, and radiant loss all happen at the top of the pool, not throughout its depth. That’s why heater sizing uses square footage of surface area rather than total gallons, unlike chemical dosing or fill-time calculations, which scale with volume.

The Cover Effect

A pool cover is one of the most effective ways to cut heating costs. Electric Heat Pumps

Heat pumps don’t generate heat directly — they extract it from the surrounding air, the way a refrigerator moves heat rather than creating it. That makes them far more efficient: a typical heat pump has a coefficient of performance (COP) around 5, meaning it produces roughly 5 units of heat energy for every unit of electricity it consumes. Solar Heaters

Solar pool heaters use rooftop or ground-mounted panels to warm water using sunlight, circulated through the existing pump system. They have no ongoing fuel cost and the lowest environmental impact, but output depends entirely on sun exposure and local climate, and upfront installation cost is comparable to or higher than a heat pump. Should I heat my pool 24/7 or only when I plan to swim?

For gas heaters, most owners heat on demand since gas heats quickly and doesn’t need to run continuously.
